Tonight we're staying in Vík, a small town located in a valley between two mountains. In order to get there we had to bike over one of them, and the 12% uphill was just too much for both of us. Luckily there were no other cyclists to witness our moment of defeat - earlier we had bumped into the same Spanish guy we met yesterday, and later we met two Americans who were almost finished with their own tour of Iceland.
If I'm not mistaken the whole name of the place is Vik i Myrdal and it is situated near the Myrdalsjökull, under which is the volcano Katla. And just to the west of that is the Eyjafjallajökull. Did you see any marks of the jökulhlaups (floods caused by the eruption) of the last spring whe you were biking towards Vik?

Yes, that's the place. :) We don't really know how it looked before the April eruption, but we did see small rivers that had clearly been bigger earlier this year, so maybe that's where the water rushed down from the mountains. A bit of a scary thought.
ReplyDeleteYep, that's nothing wrong with walking the bike on steep hills, it's more important to get to the next place with some breath to breath .
